I didn’t set out to start a consultancy. I set out to build things properly.
It began in the late 1990s, not long after I finished a Master of Biochemical Engineering — working as a Quality Manager for local companies, building quality management systems from the ground up. That early experience carried me onto one of the largest gas developments in the world, where I spent the better part of a decade working through a series of international joint ventures, eventually running a quality function of 150 people across engineering offices, on a project portfolio worth close to $17 billion. I learned early that on projects of that scale, “quality” isn’t a department — it’s the thing standing between a $6 million standards gap and a $1.5 billion funding release getting stuck.
I brought that experience to Australia in 2009 and kept building it — leading risk and quality assurance for a state-wide smart-meter rollout, running quality across nine offices for subsea operations, and managing the procurement quality function for a US$20.4 billion pipeline and LNG development. Since then, we’ve led quality on a $2.3 billion high-capacity train build in Victoria, and we currently manage quality systems for national rail infrastructure programs and for pharmaceutical warehousing and transport operations.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, we noticed a gap. The businesses we were working with at that scale had entire departments dedicated to getting quality and safety systems right — because they had to. But the smaller businesses we met along the way, the ones without a $2 billion budget or a 150-person team, were often left to figure ISO certification out on their own, or to pay for something generic that didn’t fit how they actually worked.
